I love Christmas and everything about it. The cheesy Christmas music, decorations, twinkly lights, school nativities, parties and of course the rich food and constant drinks.

We are currently in mid December and so far I have attended 3 Christmas parties- all of which involved a sit down dinner and I have 2 more before the 23rd, then the family descends to eat, drink and be merry. Sound familiar?

So, how do I enjoy myself whilst ensuring I remain in shape during the festive season? Here is what I do and advise my clients to do:

  • Stay active. This does not need to be a full gym workout (unless you want it to be). Activity can be anything as long as you are moving your body, catch up with a friend or family member whilst enjoying a walk, play table tennis/twister/hide and seek with the kids, have a kitchen disco or if you need some calm, find time to practise some yoga/pilates.
  • Choose your indulgences- do you adore Christmas pudding or is it the cheese board that you can't resist? For me its the former (with clotted cream- I am a Devon maid after all) The point is, there are foods that we get pleasure from and others we eat because they are offered or just there. Think about what things you truly enjoy and enjoy them without guilt. Then decide upon the foods/drinks that don't give as much pleasure and avoid them.
  • Watch your alcohol intake. Now, I also enjoy a glass of wine or two but if you are having it more than a couple of times a week then this is one to be mindful of.  Ask yourself, how will I feel if I don't drink at every social gathering? Are you able to stop at a couple or once you start do all good intention's vanish quicker than a bowl of crisps at a party? If you can't resist a drink, ensure to hydrate with water in between glasses.
  • Eat your usual foods/meals in between the celebrations.
  • Enjoy Christmas day! This is a time for celebration and coming together with loved ones for one wonderful day a year, enjoy all that it offers without guilt.
